Who is eligible for citizenship through naturalization

Naturalization is a legal process, by which permanent residents of the United States can become its citizens. You can obtain US citizenship, if you meet the following qualifications:

  • Age. An applicant must be at least 18 years old, although children of US citizens can obtain citizenship through the naturalization of their parents.
  • Status. A foreign national must maintain the status of a legal US permanent resident for at least five years. Spouses of American citizens have the right to apply for naturalization, if they have maintained the status of permanent resident for at least 3 years, while still married to their American spouses.
  • Residence. The applicant is required to maintain a continuous residence and physical presence within the United States for 5 or 3 years, depending on the conditions of the status, with some limited exceptions.
  • Language level. Ability to read, write and speak basic English.
  • Knowledge of history. Knowledge and understanding of the US history and state structure.
  • Good Moral Character.
